Our Philosophy
Our philosophy is encapsulated in the four words we use to describe our process:

These are the four steps we pursue in every project, whether we are creating a new structure, renovating existing facilities, restoring blighted older buildings, or assisting a community-based nonprofit more capacity to provide services and fulfill its mission.
We continue to learn so much from the remarkable faith, family, and community traditions we are privileged to serve. We fundamentally believe that truly great design comes from the exceptional energy that defines each group’s identity.
We humbly approach each challenge by working side-by-side with community and congregation members to find the best and most appropriate solution. The results embody the unique spirit that draws people together as they share a common vision.
Meet the Team
- Ben Heimsath
Ben Heimsath is Principal of Heimsath Architects with overall management responsibilities. His specialty is in group facilitation, design and marketing. Ben’s contributions include the development of many collaborative tools for design including the unique, all-day Design Retreat Workshop.Thought Leader, Architect, Neighborhood Volunteer
Ben received his Master of Architecture from Harvard University, and his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where he majored in architecture. Ben has served in numerous volunteer leadership roles. A former planning commissioner, he actively participates in local planning and neighborhood improvement projects. Ben is currently a board member of I-Act, (Interfaith Action of Centeral Texas), an established non-profit providing multi-faith service and social programs.
Ben is a frequent contributor to the Heimsath Architects’ blog. He shares his many insights about the design process and working with specific design challenges. Ben also writes a personal blog, Sacred Space, Holy Place, where he shares his observations about sacred environments in our modern world.
Principal and Senior Partner, Ben brings his skills as an expert in group visioning, community design, and shared problem-solving, to every project. His contributions include many collaborative tools for design and conflict resolution, including the large-group community forum and the unique, all-day Design Retreat Workshop. As a second-generation leader of the firm, Ben has decades of experience with hundreds of projects dating to the earliest days of the firm. He has cultivated a deep understanding of the wide variety of historic American architectural styles including Modernism. This perspective contributes to the firm’s reputation for celebrated designsrelating seamlessly to existing structures, including historic landmarks.
Ben has served on a range of planning boards and commissions and currently serves on the City of Austin Historic Landmark Commission and is due to be appointed to the Downtown Commission. He invests time with his wife’s 4th grade class assisting with reading and grading writing journals. Ben has rediscovered his sketchbook and now is posting daily on Instagram.
- Sandy Stone
Sandy leads the interior design work on most of our projects. She really understands the artful balance between creating inviting, appropriate, and often colorful spaces while maintaining cost effectiveness, long-term durability, and lasting design. Sandy is also an experienced specification writer and performs Quality Assurance reviews on many of our projects. Her experience in historic preservation also adds to her understanding and sensitivity to existing buildings of all ages.Historic Preservation and Project Management
As preservation architect, Sandy brings her extensive experience in construction, project management, and historic materials. She is both a licensed architect and licensed interior designer.
Sandy’s project architect experience includes a variety of major public and institutional buildings, including many schools, courthouses and churches. Sandy contributes additional expertise from her time as a project manager with a roofing company and with a restoration contractor.
In her spare time Sandy is a master gardener and loves playing with her three grandchildren.
